Coronation Cup
Challenge Stornoway Plastics Prize
Wednesday 14th July 2010 |
|||
|
With fresh winds from the North East the Dinghy tuition was cancelled and the Sail in Company to Bayble was also cancelled. In place the Stornoway Plastics Trophy took place. This was a great opportunity to get visiting boat familiar to racing around the cans! This spontaneous challenge became a very exiting scene for the spectators on land. It was decided at the morning briefing to include a visitor’s prize. Due to the weather the barbecue took place at the Sea Angling Club where great music and food was to be found. We will need to wait till next year for the Flubber race, Treasure Hunt. |

Day Boat
Challenge
Thursday 15th July 2010 |
|||
|
With the weather still providing changes to the program it was decided to run all 3 of the Day Boat Series in the afternoon. Two boats took part in the race, the first lap became a spectacular scene for the dozen or so spectators who were on Goat Island. This first lap ended with a 4 second win from David’s Wayfarer over No Disgrace. Unfortunately, during the second leg No Disgrace had a rig failure, which gave the title to Wayfarer David. |

Spirit of Rema
Award
For Past Year’s Sailing
Adventures Trophy Donated by Ian Stephen This is a new award starting in 2010. This is to be an annual prize
for the skipper who undertakes an exceptional passage in the "Spirit of
Rema" or has recently take-up the sport of sailing, or has displayed
something which is in keeping with the sensibilities of Edward who over
wintered in Stornoway 2010 and who contributed much to the local sailing
community around the harbour |
AwardSpirit of Rema Trophy (annually) And Metal Rose (gift to keep) |
|
Awarded
to: John Macbeth, Dunderave June 2010 Voyage to Shetland and Norway, Norwegian
cruise and return This was the culmination of over a year's work
bringing a project boat into use as a live-aboard yacht, then into a
condition to be safe for open water crossings. In the week before sailing
John designed and fitted a self-draining cockpit system. The boat is well
fitted out but it is a Spartan vessel for a crossing of this duration - the
voyage in a 26ft yacht, requires a combination of nerve, on board social
skills, good navigation and good sailing abilities. |
|
Runner
Up Rob and Karin Whelton,
Mavanier June
10 First
cruise in a yacht they'd only owned for some months. Passage planning to work
shifting air stream and tides to make good timing in passage from Stornoway
to Rodel pool in a 27ft Albin Vega. Another good passage on return. |
|
Deemed
Highly Commendable David Skelly and Niall
Afrin, Wayfarer For their homeward journey from Witches pool to Stornoway in early June. They sailed back behind Jubilee in the dark and conditions were very rough, cold and wet. Their sailing skills, youth, (16 and 17 yrs old), 'spirit of adventure' and optimism deserve recognition. Anecdotal yarns tell of the contribution that David has made to the local sailing community, which is in keeping with Edwards own spirit. |
